Remember How Important 100 Is

Remember the times in elementary school when we would celebrate the “100 days of school?”

If your school didn’t do that you were missing out. It was a time when school children and faculty and teachers and parents would come together and celebrate the monumentous number that is 100 and more importantly what the number 100 means. In relation to school, 100 meant that the year was almost over, so like any sensible educational system would do, a party would be held in order to recognize what an exciting number 100 is. I remember having to bring in 100 of some sort of small item, like Cheerios or M&M’s. I would count them out at home (ever so carefully) and my mom would double check my math (which was needed). Then we would go to school and do some super-fun activity with our 100-counts of an item.

To celebrate 100 once again, because this is my 100th post on WordPress, I decided to count out, or write out (I should say) 100 things that I want to do (in no particular order of importance). It’s not a bucket list because I don’t know if a) I will want these things to happen in the future or, b) if they will indeed end up happening.

Now that you’ve read this all the way through, it’s time for you to know what you’ve earned…nothing! But in all seriousness, you did get to see how cool the number 100 is. Just knowing that I’ve spent countless hours, minutes, probably well over 100, on this blog is something worth noting. See if this compares to counting out candies for your seven year old to take to class.

Being a Better “Me”

I do this every year. I claim that I will work out, and be healthier, but it never happens. Do we every truly commit and complete our resolutions? I know I never did. Sure, the month of January would go smoothly with me eating right, but I would soon give up and go back to my bad habits. I think this year it will be different. I decided I truly will be a healthier person. But let me blab to you about my life story, so you really will get the feel of why I want to make a change.

I had a good childhood. I was always the smallest kid in my class, and the most petite. I did have stick-like legs and arms, and rarely gained weight. My friends parents would call me a garbage disposal, and they would always plop extra helpings of food on my plate, trying to “fatten” me up, so to speak.

Then of course, puberty took its toll, and I realized I no longer had that awesome metabolism like I once did. Sure, I could still eat as much as I wanted of all the delicious foods my friends were wary about, but I had noticed I was developing a pudgy tummy. I still was the smallest of my friends though, so I never thought anything of my growing pouch of flubber.

I ran a lot my with my family when I was younger, and we always played a ton of sports that involved getting too sweaty. Both my mother and father were extremely fit back then, and are to this day, even if they are creeping into their mid 50’s. My mother is in better shape than I am, and my father has enough muscle that scared any of my potential boyfriends away.

I joined track in high school, and with all the working out I was actually hungrier than if I wouldn’t have been working out. The good thing was I got toned, and I felt a lot more in shape, even if I did have the appetite as a hungry-hungry-hippo.

Unfortunately, once high school ended, I certainly wasn’t driven towards exercising and eating healthy. I (embarrassingly) consumed too much fast food the year before freshman year. Obviously, this is a huge cause of weight gain, and add on the fact I wasn’t very active (I worked all summer) you can bet I packed on the freshman 15 before school had even started.

Thankfully, college changed my eating habits. I lost the 10-15 lbs just by cutting out fast food altogether (and swearing off the garbage). Since I commuted, I was forced to pack a healthy lunch, or I would be forced to spend $10 on a salad from my school’s pub.

Since I am still a commuter, I spend a good portion of my day running to and from either the train or my house. It takes up time that could be spent napping, relaxing, or you guessed it, exercising. My courses were hard freshman year because I had a lot of classes that had nothing to do with my major, so I often spent most of my free time keeping my grades up. I would go straight home and change for work, or sometimes, go straight from school to work. I always work until 9 p.m. so I don’t have much free time when I get back home. It’s quick eat dinner, get ready for tomorrow, and do my homework or study. As you may guess, exercising was not on my to-do list.

Now, this year, I had a hard time managing my time. I have another job working at my school in the marketing and communications

department. It’s not a grueling, physical job, but I do have to be in the office for it to count as work. It takes up time that I would probably spend doing homework (or maybe exercising?) but I love the job, and I love the experience I am getting. So, it’s been hard to work in eating right and exercising, on top of going to school full-time, working two part time jobs, and having a social life.

Some people tell me, “I don’t know how you do it, working and going to school.” Sure I love the money, but to be honest, I love the jobs just as much. I always wondered how other people stay active even with a busy life. How do they get up at 4 a.m. and go for a 5 mile run before heading off onto their commute for work? How do they squeeze in working out at the gym after an eight hour day at the office? How do they find time to pack a healthy lunch, when it’s easier to just pick up lunch at convenient store?

Well, they love it. I’d also say motivation. If you think positively, you can pretty much do anything.  I also like to think you need a support group, an entourage, cheerleaders; you name it. Just someone who will be there for you no matter what.

One of my challenges has been finding my motivation. I am lucky to be surrounded by people who only want what is best for me. But, a flaw I have is comparing myself to all my close friends and family, which gives me nothing but doubt.

It’s hard having two extremely fit parents because it seems like everything they do works for them. It’s hard having a naturally in-shape boyfriend, and friends. I look at them and think, why can’t it be that simple?

Every time I have tried to get back into my healthy habits, I have been surrounded by discouragement. Not by everyone, just some people don’t understand. They see me eating carrot sticks and a yogurt and complain, “You don’t need to eat like that, here, have a cookie.” And so I eat that cookie, because they make me feel like I don’t need to eat the healthy food. People are always telling me, “Oh stop. You don’t need to cut back, you’re skinny” or “You’re tiny what are you talking about??”

No. I’m not tiny. I’m not just some insecure girl who wants to be like the girls she sees in magazines and movies. I just want to be a healthier person. It’s not weird to like yogurt, nuts, protein bars, salads, vegetables, or fruits. I sure do love my sweets, my carbs, and my sodium. But I can’t consume it all the time. That’s not me.

I’ve started this “New Madi” thing Monday. It’s only been about a week, but I’m keeping it up. I haven’t gone crazy and eaten a whole cake. I downloaded this app on my iPod called My Fitness Pal, which helps you keep track of exercising, diet, and calories.

It sounds like every other calorie counting app out there, but so far, I have nothing bad to say. When I look down at my iPod and it tells me I ate cookies and cake as my snacks, it’s a slap in the face. It’s right there in front of me, and it gives me the motivation to do something good for myself. So, when I look down and see all these healthy things I have eaten for the day, it makes me smile, and gives me the strength to keep going.

I’m trying to add more cardio, strength exercises, and yoga into my life. Hopefully I can work out at least three times a week for the rest of the semester. I hope to hear from others about their motivation for working out, or maybe if you have a story of how you changed and became healthier!

An Award? For Me?

Well I knew I was going to write something tonight, but little did I know that it would be thanking the academy, my parents, and Jesus.  Oh wait, wrong speech…

I am thanking the one blogger who nominated me for this thing called the “Very Inspiring Blogger” award.  Blogger “B” from Rambles, Rants and Raves has awarded me this award.  This concept is new to me, but I am always open to receiving things like gifts, candy, back massages, and virtual awards.  Please check out her blog (I’m assuming she is female because there was one post of Ryan Gosling shirtless…..let’s be serious.) because the posts are witty and easy to relate to, and I love people that rant.

So, there are some rules to accepting this award.  I better follow them.  Whoever is nominated needs to:

I need to say seven things about myself.  Well, what to say.

1. I love cats.  Like, if I didn’t have a boyfriend, I would be considered a crazy cat lady.  Actually, it doesn’t really matter that I’m dating.  I am still a crazy cat lady.  But I don’t care, look at my kitties and tell me you wouldn’t be crazy about them. 

2.  I have two jobs, which are amusing and busy for the most part.  I am a “librarian’s assistant” at a library, and at my college, I work in the Marketing and Communications department. Basically, I am surrounded by computers, books, and writing.  Three of my favorite things!

3.  I am trying to be a decent cook, so I have been collecting cookbooks and stashing them in my attic for when I move out.  I have made some pretty okay dishes like Fettuccine Alfredo and Butternut Squash Soup.  My all-time favorite book (that I want to buy) is Martha’s American Food.  Every single recipe makes me go, “MMMM.”

4. I always enjoy meeting new people.  I talk excessively and when someone talks back and shares the same interests, I dub them my friend.  Sometimes that works out.  I met this super spectacular guy at the library.  He always checks out Shakespeare books or classics.  He has a great personality and my night is not-so-terrible when he comes in to say, “What’s up.”

5.  I have a collection of Winnie the Pooh merchandise.  Books, mugs, stuffed animals, a kite, PEZ dispensers, and mini statues.  A.A. Milne would be proud.

6.  I’m sure most of you know the next fact…but I cannot live without my coffee.  House blend, dark roast, light roast, Pumpkin flavored, Hazelnut, French Vanilla, gas station coffee, home brewed, Keurig cups, Dunkin Donuts, Starbucks….you name it, I will drink it.  I typically spend half of my paycheck at Dunkin Donuts.  Caramel coffee with cream no sugar.

7.  When I do math homework I don’t understand, I get so worked up that I start to hyperventilate  which also includes me pulling my eyelids and yelling, “MATH IS STUPID.”

There are seven more facts you probably didn’t care to know but read anyway.  Now, for the people I nominate.  These are in no particular order either.

1.  Fed Up Food:  The best blog if you want to hear someone rant about food.  He rants, and gives recommendations about all kinds of food.  Some people don’t really care too much about what they are eating or where they are eating.  Some of his posts really make me laugh, and some really open my eyes to the important world of eating.

2.  Mae’s Beauty Reports:  I love doing art on my nails, and the best way to get tips on how to do so is on Mae’s blog.  She claims to be no professional, but her nail art looks like something you would have to go to school for in order to perfect!  Stop by her blog for great tips on nail art, makeup, and also accessories!

3.  Bucket List Publications:  You know when you sit around with your friends and say how much you want to travel and experience the world?  Well, this blog shows how one woman doesn’t just talk about it, she actually goes out and achieves her “wildest dreams.”  From rock climbing to skydiving it seems to me this woman has done it all, and the fact that she doesn’t plan on stopping makes me continue to stop by her blog.

4.  The Life and Times of Nathan Badley:  This was one of the first blogs I followed, shortly around the time when I started my own blog.  I love his writing because it is about random things that are both funny and relevant.  A recent post about cupcakes really had me “Lol.”

5.  Sarah Smiles Awhile:  Also another hilarious blogger.  I love her humor and her usage of lists in her about me section.  I too, love lists!  I think I always smile when I read her post, and I know you will too!

6.  The Urchin Movement:  I really enjoy reading the posts of the Urchins.  They provide a topic of conversation for any ordinary human being.  Their categories range from politics to art.  Stop by if you want something a bit more serious.

7.  Misanthropology 101:  First found this blogger because he had a post about his cats.  As you know from my seven facts above, I love cats.  So therefore, I love this blogger.  Okay, that’s a stretch, but his posts are amusing, and he writes about some of my favorite things (I am talking things other than cats).  Check out his blog because I feel like I am not doing his writing justice.

8.  Disphotic:  He uses photography and writing on his blog.  His writing includes a variety of topics, and I enjoy the fact that he is a photojournalist.  Stop by his blog and prepare to be amazed!

9.  Canadian Hiking Photography:  They say a picture is worth a thousand words.  This guy has a passion for both photography and hiking, and you can see some pretty magnificent photographs, and even purchase some (which trust me, you’ll want to).

10.  Vintage Vicar:  Another thing I love is fashion.  I am always trying to find funky outfits to wear to school, or work, or for whatever! I really enjoy this fashion blog.  It is apparent she loves clothing of all kinds, and I like to look at her posts when I am need for something different to add to my own outfits.

I only listed 10 blogs instead of 15 because I am getting tired and I am lazy.  I apologize to the Blog Award Cops.  Please don’t arrest me.  Perhaps I will add on the other five at a later date.  My laziness reminds me that I really need to start blogging every day.  I am sure the bloggers I nominated above are more determined to post everyday, whereas I am not.  I use these bloggers for motivation when I am feeling down-in-the-dumps.  Sometimes you can’t look toward your Facebook friends for inspiration.  The true passionate people are the ones on WordPress.  They blog because they have a passion for something, whether it be fashion, food, writing, or photography.  Keep on writing friends, thanks for the inspiration!  And thanks again B for my first ever award.  I’m glad my goofy rants and attempt at motivational posts are good enough for someone (other than my cats)!

The Detox Diaries: “It’s a Wonderful Life”

This is when I know a banana is perfect. You can see how speckled they are, that to me means dig in!

Today was day four in my body detox.  I woke up and felt a bit sore from running the other day.  Nothing a little stretching can’t do to solve those aches and pains!  I fixed myself a cup of Salada’s Citrus green tea with antioxidants, and this tea really is my favorite.  It’s not bitter, in fact it is quite sweet!  I had a gigantic, perfectly overripe banana for breakfast.  So satisfying.  Banana’s taste like grass, in my opinion, unless you let them get nice and soft and beyond the point of being ripe.  Just don’t let them go squishy!  I have found that a bruised, or squishy banana works very nicely in a smoothie.  You don’t have to look at the ugly bruises, and you have salvaged a piece of fruit, instead of wasting it.

I wasn’t feeling too hungry today, probably because I had butterflies in my stomach (I will talk about why that was later).  So I fixed myself up a light lunch of stir-fry veggies with basil.  Basil is so wonderful, and it works with a lot of dishes.  I have grown to like it in my stir-fry because it gives the vegetables a nice flavor without overwhelming the dish.  I chopped up some carrots, green and yellow peppers, and threw in some cabbage.  I have really begun to love simple stir-fry like this.  My father tends to make stir-fry a lot more elaborate than I do.  He typically uses sesame seed oil to flavor the stir-fry, which is heavenly.  I’d say it’s about five minutes cutting all the vegetables, and about another five or so to cook.  How simple is that?

After my lunch, I fixed up another mug of decaffeinated tea to calm my nerves.  I had a meeting for a potential internship for the summer today, so hence the butterflies. I knew I needed to eat and drink water though, because I didn’t want to be passing out in front of my interviewer.  The walk to the newspaper offices was about a mile, and it is in a lovely town called Doylestown.  The sun was shining, and it was a beautiful day for a walk (even in the most painful flats ever to exist).  I had to walk to and from the office building, and then take the train home, so all in all I had about two miles of walking.

The rest of the day went well.  I was getting a bit hungry at work, and it did not help when my boss brought me and a co-worker Kit Kat bars.  Sigh.  The gesture was sweet but sadly candy is not on the list for a detox.  I was very tempted to have just one (they were mini) but my co-worker was a good friend and urged me not to eat them!  Such a good friend!  He is another form of inspiration to me.  He went several long months without any type of sugar that is not natural.  That eliminates a lot of food.  I would feel bad every time a co-worker would bring in cakes or brownies, cupcakes or cookies, but he stuck with it.  Way to go!  I moved on from the Kit Kat incident and went on my break.  I had a granny smith apple which was not so satisfying.  It was very bruised.

Overall this day was a very good day.  I was glad I could resist urges that I felt through foods I could not have.  I was able to make yet again another satisfying meal.  And as an added bonus, I got the internship!

The Detox Diaries: It’s All About Attitude

It was day three today, and today was all about my attitude.  I woke up this morning, and did some wake-up yoga poses (very simple stretches, really).  I thought I was going to have a headache, but I believe the stretches helped scare it away.  I made my Salada Citrus tea with antioxidants, and fixed up my day one breakfast consisting of a grapefruit and banana.  I love banana’s when they are slightly overripe.  All of the natural sugars come to the surface, and it just tastes a whole lot better than a not-so-ripe-banana.  I drank some water with lemon wedges, and put on my running gear.

It has been awhile since I have gone on a run, so I made sure to stretch.  I have many friends who dismiss stretching, and say “Oh, I don’t need to stretch.”  Stop the madness!  There are many people who say stretching doesn’t matter, but after many years of running, I have concluded that I personally, must stretch before and after a run.  The benefits of stretching are the warming up of the muscles, decrease in injury, and it helps increase flexibilty.  Plus I think it just feels good.  Today I felt a lot of pain in my hamstrings, for no particular reason, and I found stretching made me feel much better.  I even found less pain after I had run.

have to have music on when I run.  It helps me clear my mind, and an upbeat song always keeps me moving.  While I have a taste for alternative music, I normally choose upbeat, sing-song-y pop songs to run to.  Here is my playlist for today:

I typically go for a mile, or two miles if I am feeling adventurous.  In high school I was more of a sprinter than I was long distance, but I can maintain a steady pace and go for a mile without losing a lung.  After my run, I stretched and cooled down.

When I washed up, I used Neutrogena’s Naturals Purifying Pore Scrub.  I highly recommend this, especially when on a detox.  This pore scrub has no harsh chemicals, and instead contains willowbark and jojoba beads.  These strange items are good for the skin, and do not burn it like some other facial products will do.  It is a really great scrub, and I always feel very clean after using it.  On a detox, some studies recommend using natural facial and body cleansers.  If you are using cleansers with high amounts of chemicals, you aren’t maximizing the decrease in toxins.

As for food, I had leftover brown rice with vegetables, and two kiwis for lunch.  My mother informed me that the kiwi is another super food, it contains many vitamins, minerals, and it is so delicious!  Kiwi’s are very easy to eat, just cut in half and scoop out with a spoon!

I also had a before work snack of a mango, strawberry, banana, orange and spinach leave smoothie!  Complete with a bendy straw.

The straw definitely made it taste better!

At work, I snacked on carrot sticks, and had a baked sweet potato for part one of my dinner.  When I came home, I whipped up some stir-fry, this time I added small chunks of celery.  All of the other vegetables go nicely with this refreshing vegetable.  I also added yellow peppers, because it’s important to have your bright colors each day.

At last the day winds down, and I sip on my Salada tea to relax.  Today was all about attitude.  I woke up with a positive attitude to get things done.  I did yoga, and went for a run.  I could have slept in until the cows came home, but instead I put a smile on my face and made the best of a beautiful day!  Side note, I also did some belated spring cleaning!  It all depends on your attitude.  If you can think positively, you can do anything!

The Detox Diaries: A Day of Doubt

Today was day two of my body detox.  Unfortunately, I woke up with a bad headache.  I always get headaches so not sure if this is the caffeine withdrawal or just a typical day in the life of Madi.  However, with some slight hesitation to get out of bed, I headed to the kitchen to fix me a cup of tea.  This time it was Salada’s Citrus with original antioxidants.  Thoroughly enjoyed this tea, even though it was not a steaming cup of joe.  Besides my tea, my breakfast was a smoothie (frappe as I like to call them) consisting of:

One mango

One orange

One apple (any kind works) peeled

Three plump strawberries

Handful of spinach leaves

Ice

The combinations were quite delicious.  I really enjoy mangoes in any kind of smoothie.  I tried using apples after trying a smoothie in the mall where they used them.  I was skeptical, but the taste is refreshing and sweet.  The spinach leaves were thrown in last minute.  Blended up spinach is a beneficial way to get protein, a variety of vitamins, fiber and iron!  Plus, it has relatively no taste when mixed in with all of the other fruits, so it is a plus to add this leafy green.

It rained the entire day so there was no chance I was going to run (like I normally do).  I could have tried to do some cardio, but do to the pounding that was my headache, I opted out of that for today.  I did go for a brisk walk to the supermarket carrying a gallon of milk on my back, so I wasn’t completely immobile.

My lunch consisted of a salad with iceberg lettuce, carrots, cabbage, and sugar peas.  When I eat salads, I normally choose a light vinaigrette or some sort of oily dressing rather than a ranch dressing.  Since I can’t eat any of those, I made my own dressing consisting of squeezed grapefruit juice, orange juice, and a little lemon zest.  I found it to be surprisingly juicy and fresh.  It made the vegetables in the salad have flavor, and they were juicy because they were not weighed down by a thick dressing.  I also had a handful of almonds for a snack.

My dinner was a stir-fried medley of broccoli and cauliflower, with a side of brown rice that was blended with a mixture of onions and peppers.  Overall, satisfying.

Today was a disappointment in the way I felt emotionally.  At one point I really wanted to stop this detox nonsense, and pour me a cup of coffee and have a big bowl of cereal.  This upset me even more because I was having doubts on the second day!  I had a horrible headache, and this contributed to my crankiness, for sure.  The fact that I can’t eat any of the foods I normally would played a part as well.  Then I had to have a nice chat with my subconcious.  This detox is teaching me some self control.  I do enjoy eating good food, and I am at a comfortable weight for my age and height (of course it would not hurt to run a little more, maybe some crunches here and there).  Despite that fact, I need to learn to not eat just because I can, and to be a little more conscientious about the foods I do eat.  It was helpful that my mother was around me today to coax me back into my positive attitude, and my kitty was there waiting for a good cuddle.

Today was difficult, but overall a good learning experience.  I am gaining more self control that I can use later on in life, and it will help me maintain a good healthy lifestyle after this detox.  I think I will try yoga tomorrow, and start up my meditation again.  That seems to help when I am stressed.  Having people around me that support my decision also is helpful.  The more people cheer me on, the more I want to continue.  I don’t want to let down others, but more importantly, I do not want to let down myself.
